Guru Purnima is the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashad (July-August). This year Guru Poornima will be celebrated on 31st July 2015.It is the day where we pay respect and gratitude to our “Gurus”. It is stated in our Shastras that the guru is the biggest blessing of all. He is the one who is the remover of the darkness in your life. It is mostly celebrated in Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. It is also known as “Vyasa Purnima” in honor of the great sage Vyasa who is believed to be the greatest Guru ever. It is believed that he was born on this day.
The word guru is derived from the Sanskrit language where “gu” means darkness and “ru” means remover of this darkness. Hence, Guru guides us and helps us achieve our aims in life. Also, he is the one to show the path to spiritualism and achieve contentment.
On this day, we should remember our Gurus in whatever way is possible. Meet them, pay respect and gift something to show our gratitude towards them.
There are no fixed rules on how to celebrate Guru Purnima, but one is advised to get up early and offer prayers after bathing.
Then prayers in the name of one’s Guru should be offered. Also, you should pray to all our saints, gurus and teachers for their blessings.
You should meet your guru and pay respect.
If possible offer food to saints and sadhus in the evening.
